Review Slice It!

Jay Feldman
Quality sound, quality animation, quality graphics, lots of levels
Lags a bit, unbalanced difficulty, aggressive ad system
Slice It! for Android is a great game for kids and adults. It’s a brain teaser that requires strategy, logic and even nominal math and geometry skills.
Slice It! can be as much a learning tool as it is a game. It’s really a pleasure to play and holds your interest with the playful and engaging presentation. The game takes place on what looks like a child’s desktop. A geometric shape is drawn with a colored pencil on a sheet of graph paper, then instructions particular to that round are given. The object of the game is to slice the geometric object into a set number of pieces. So you might have 3 slices to get 8 pieces. Once you’re done slicing, the proportions are measured and you score bonus points for accuracy; the closer each sliced piece is in size to the others, the better the score. So if you’re slicing a shape in two, you’re trying to get 50/50; if in 3, then you’re trying to get 33.3% x 33.3% x 33.3%, and so on.
The graphics are very playful and look like an animated cartoon. It’s all very inviting and colorful. The game itself is not difficult, but does get more and more complex as the rounds advance. It’s a thinker’s game and a brain teaser. There are tons of levels to unlock and try, so this will keep you busy for a good while.
The animation is clean, the graphics look really good and the sounds are appropriately lighthearted without being monotonous. The game did run my battery warm, so all those fun animations are stressing the system and battery, but it all looks great and plays well. The biggest downside of this app are the aggressive ads. They do get in the way and are tedious, but that’s just how it is.
Slice It! is a lot of fun. Parents and kids might enjoy playing together, and the educational element is great. But gamers who like puzzlers will love this too.
