Review S.O.L : Stone of Life EX

Brandon Girod
It’s a real RPG, gameplay is fun, there is a lot of room for character progression
Movement controls aren’t great, some of the menu options aren’t intuitive
Just when I thought all real mobile RPGs either didn’t exist or where $15+, here comes S.O.L.: Stone of Life EX for Android, an incredible action RPG that really deserves the title. You play as one of two characters who is searching for the Stone of Life, a stone with unimaginable power. You have to find it before anyone else does and prevent a war that would ruin the land.
When you first start off, you’ll be prompted to select from a male or female character and choose between a few classes. I personally chose the one that let me dual wield, but you can also be a knight, berserker, and some type of mage. Each character plays pretty much how you would imagine, and there is a lot of room to build your character however you’d like. You’ll earn loot that you can equip your character with, set up your passive skills, active skills, and allocate some stat points.
Combat is actually really good, despite the fact that the game’s movement controls are pretty terrible. You can tap the screen to activate skills you have set to your hotbar, and your character will automatically attack the closest thing to it. That can be good or bad since you typically can’t choose who to focus down if there are two enemies standing right next to each other.
One of my only real gripes about the game is its lack of direction and its use of repeating the same types of environments over and over again. Equipping items wasn’t something that was immediately obvious, and it took me longer than I care to admit to find where I was supposed to go after the first area.
S.O.L.: Stone of Life EX is an excellent example of a mobile RPG done right. The developers knew what type of platform they were developing on and took its limitations into consideration when they were coding it. The result is an excellent and fun game.
