Review Forest Adventure

Brandon Girod
7.9Good
Impressive atmosphere, great aesthetic, responsive controls
Gameplay wears thin fast, no rewards
Forest Adventures for Android is a game that oozes style, atmosphere, and presence. It reminds me a bit of Limbo and Ori and the Blind Forest put together, but it’s an endless runner, which means you’re not going to get anywhere near the same depth out of this game as you would the two mentioned above. That said, this one is still a bit more interesting.
The level dynamics and design are what makes this game more interesting than some similar games I’ve recently played through. Here, your only mechanic is a very normal jump; you can’t double jump. Your character automatically walks across the screen, and you have to use that jump to react to whatever the level throws at you. This could be vines that slow your character down - threatening death by screen - or a pit full of spikes.
Being and endless runner, the objective is to get as far as you can so you can put a larger number on the leaderboard. I found the game to be a little slow when it comes to pacing, however. Many times I’d be reduced to just jumping through vines that slowed me down. Other times, I’d just find myself getting straight up stuck on a part of the level, unable to move any further.
Interest in the game begins to wane fast once you notice that there are no rewards to work towards, and the game’s level aesthetic remains the same throughout. Suddenly, once you feel like you’ve seen everything the game has to offer, you realize there isn’t much keeping you there because it’s not like the game is really that great.
Forest Adventure would had a greater impact on player experience if the game had been divided into levels and a story was thrown in there. The atmosphere and design is just too good to waste on an endless runner with limited depth.
