Fun gameplay, family friendly art style, easy to play
The hint system is way too prevalent
When it comes to matching games, I’ve been playing the heck out of match-three games and that’s about it. So it’s really refreshing to See AlphaBetty Saga for Android come along and have me matching words rather than tiles.
This game was made from the guys behind Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga, so you know that you’re at least going to have a well presented game here. You play in the world of AlphaBetty and the game will challenge you to create words together in order to hit high scores. Much like a match-three game, you’ll have various tiles will receive power-ups. If you create words with these letters then you’ll earn more points by also racking up points from letters that are taken along depending on what type of power-up the original tile was instilled with.
Each level changes the layout of the tiles and presents you with different levels of difficulty. Sometimes you’ll easily be able to spot words that seem like they were pre-determined to be there, but other times I felt like I was really struggling to make any decent matches. To make this a little worse, the hint system pops up every ten or so seconds and there is no way to turn it off. So while you’re scouring the board looking for an interesting word, you’ll constantly be distracted.
Even still, AlphaBetty Saga is a really fun game, and one that I would easily take over the host of generic match-three games I’ve been playing over the past few weeks. It pays to be original, and while this isn’t the only game like it, it’s tackling a market that desperately needs more games.
