Review Get Hi
One fun endless game
Author: Brandon Girod
Date: 04 May 2017, tested on HTC One M8
Fun gameplay mechanics, excellent rewards, solid controls
Gameplay is partly based on luck
I just finished reviewing a different one-touch endless game that embodied almost everything meh about the genre, but Get Hi for Android is one of those that really seems to understand what the genre is about. To the credit of the previous review, there is a thin line that divides an endless game from being mundane to being accessible.
So what does this game get right? Well, the mechanics. When it comes down to it, an endless runner needs to have good controls, an intriguing game mechanic, a unique aesthetic, and some cool rewards to keep things interesting in the long run. This game is by no means the best endless runner I’ve played, but it’s solid.
So, there’s a ball and an endless amount of paddles. When the game starts off, you have the ability to fling the ball up, but after that, the paddles will automatically shift so the left side is low. If you tap the screen then it will tilt the paddle to the other side, flinging the ball into the air. The key is managing which side you need the paddle to be so you can safely launch the ball higher and higher.
There is just something intrinsically fun about this mechanic. I never really thought it would get old the same way other games would. The downside is that there seems to be a limited amount of unlocks, though the ones you can get dramatically change the game’s look.
When it comes right down to it, Get Hi is just a fun game. It’s not frustrating like many other endless runners, and there is plenty here to keep someone occupied for a long while.
