Good graphics, varying gameplay mechanics, endless
Boss mechanics aren’t explained, extremely difficult
Super Puck Jam for Android is a game about violence. Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to smack someone in the face with a hockey puck? Here’s your chance to find out. It’s an endless runner based on some kind of weird hockey mafia dystopia, and it’s an interesting ride, to say the least.
The game throws you through some quick snippets of text which serve as a tutorial, and that’s all it gives you, which is totally fine. The goal of the game (no pun intended), is to make it as far as you can. Pretty typical for any endless runner. What makes this one stand out is the various game mechanics presented to the player, and the unique art style.
Players will be hitting other hockey players with slapshots--gaining bonus points for face and groin shots--but they’ll also need to avoid obstacles by skating around them or destroying them with the puck. Shooting is as very similar to playing Angry Birds, except you’ve got to be quick. Holding the puck back for three seconds will build up a shot that does double damage, but more often than not, you’re going to be rapidly shooting at just about everything you can.
Throughout the game you’ll collect coins, which can be used to upgrade your character. Most of these are pretty cool upgrades, but are incredibly costly. You can buy new gear, which increases your stats, and ways to increase the life of your character among various other things.
Overall, Super Puck Jam is a pretty interesting game that offers players a pretty diverse gameplay experience. The hockey theme might throw some people off, but fans of endless runners who stick with it will probably find their decision rewarded.
