Review The Pixel Hero: Archercraft

7.8Good
Decent animation, interesting graphics, interesting levels, simple controls
Monotonous game play
The Pixel Hero: Archercraft for Android is a pixelated game where you play an archer stuck up a tree. Loads of giant beasties are coming for you, including giant rats that gnaw at the base of your tree, and spiders and bats that come straight for you. You keep them at bay by firing arrows, which you do by dragging back a line, and moving it around to aim and fire. The force and direction of the arrow is represented by an arrow, which you can pull back and forth to adjust the pitch and strength.
Firing is a bit clumsy, and you have to wait a while in between each shot. That's part of the challenge of the game. But to me, this one comes across as a bit lazy on the whole, rather than having any retro or blocky appeal. The physics of the arrow are pretty decent though, you have to aim upwards a bit if you want it to go further. Taking account of the flight arc is quite interesting. It would just feel a lot more fluid if you could fire more rapidly. Also, you are consticted to dragging in the top corner of the screen, which seems unnecessary. Why not just have the ability to drag anywhere, and let the arrow be longer to give more control?
Each beastie has their own energy bar, and they explode with pixellated blood when they finally die. One tactic you can use if the rats get right up to the base of your tree is to fire the arrows directly up into the air (although this means it takes longer for them to strike). I don't get the sense that the strength of force on the arrow makes any difference to the amount of damage you inflict: I think it just always takes a certain number of arrows to kill a particular type of beast.
