DigRun for Android is easily the most unique match-three game I’ve played in a while, and it’s the first to actually change up the main mechanic of the genre. The beautiful artwork and fun theme also adds a lot to making the game feel unique and fresh.
As is typical with most mobile games, you’ll start off with a tutorial, but even before that the game will try to add a bit of backstory with a prologue. The general gist is that you’re a girl and there are angry blocks trying to chase you down. Your only option is to run.
I guess calling this a match-three is a little misleading because you actually need to match more than just three blocks of the same color. On the main screen you’ll see your character running, the group of angry blocks chasing her, and two bars. One of these bars shows your energy, and the other shows how far you are from the end of the level.
What is fundamentally different about this game is that you are actually throwing blocks onto the board, which slides other blocks aside to make room. This means you really have to think about placement even more, and you can even make matches when you don’t have a set of blocks immediately available.
What’s difficult to manage is the energy system. You lose energy every time you use a block, and if you run out of energy then you lose. Getting matches and combos will quickly fill up your energy bar for power-ups, though. Power-ups can do a variety of things, but they use up all of your energy, so using one in a bad spot can be equally damaging at times.
If you’re a fan of match-three games then DigRun is the perfect next step. The artwork is phenomenal, and the gameplay is super fun.
