Review MORTAL KOMBAT X
The best Mortal Kombat game you'll get on a phone
Author: Brandon Girod
Date: 21 Jun 2017, tested on HTC One M8
Mind blowing visuals, fun controls, engaging gameplay
Maintains the same Netherrealm Studios formula, features an arbitrary energy system
It’s been a good while since I’ve sat down with a Mortal Kombat game. The last one I really got into was MK4 back on my Nintendo 64, though I have put in a few hours here and there with some of the PS2 era entries. Mortal Kombat X for Android takes all the characters and gore from the newest console game and gives it the ol’ Injustice treatment.
If you’ve played the mobile Injustice game then all you really need to know is this is the same game but with MK characters involved. Not much has changed. If you haven’t then go ahead and download this and give it a shot, it’s absolutely fantastic.
The game pits a team of three characters against another three characters. When you start off you’re actually given a party of no-name characters that level up as you fight. Not too long in you’re given a random card that turns out to be a real character from the game, and you can continue playing the game to unlock more familiar faces.
The combat is played out through a series of taps and swipes. Most of the time you’ll find yourself just tapping over and over again until you’re prompted to swipe so you can then use your special move and continue.
My biggest problem with the game is the same issue I have with the other games. There is a needless energy system in the game and unlocking new cards is such a lengthy process that entire thing just feels like a bit money grab.
Mortal Kombat X can still be fun without paying any money into it, though, and the game looks and feels absolutely fantastic.
