A freemium baking app
Author: Brandon Girod

Interactive gameplay, good graphics
Lots of in-app purchases, has too many ads for a children’s game
Games like Cooking Mama are fun no matter who you are. If you’re not familiar with the game, it has you essentially put in all the ingredients you to need to make something and, well, you make it. But it’s a video game and not real life. The Smurfs Bakery for Android is the exact same concept but it features the Smurf characters and baking.
Let’s start with what I don’t like about this game. There are only about three types of food to make and two of the three are locked behind paywalls. There is no indication of this upfront. The player only finds this out when they jump into the game and realize just how gutted the game is.
What’s more is that the recipes don’t really matter that much. The game holds your hand and tells you exactly what to do the whole time and it doesn’t matter what the difference is. Let’s say Papa Smurf comes to you and wants something, you have literally no responsibility to remember it, just do exactly what it tells you. This detracts quite a bit from what the core experience should be.
That said, there is a lot of different ways to make things and even if you choose the wrong ingredients no one seems to care. Most of the game’s value seems to be in the repetitive motions of chopping up ingredients, stirring, and pouring. All of which is just fine for the targeted audience.
The Smurfs Bakery is a fun baking game where you are able to bake virtual treats for fun. Unfortunately, you only get access to one recipe for free and have to pay an additional $9.99 to unlock it all or various other amounts to unlock the game in pieces. Fortunately there are preventative measures put in place so children can’t make a purchase without their consent.
