Neat graphics, interesting plot, simple controls
Very common, bores you really quickly, slow animation
Gem Miner 2 is a retro arcade style game that has you digging for gold into the depths of the earth with your trusty pickax. Just swing that thing like a mad man to crush through stone and a variety of earthen materials to strike it rich with virtual cash, or get plum tuckered out trying. Yes, you literally need to pace yourself for a marathon here, lest your old mining geezer get winded.
The play is fairly straightforward and repetitive. You can dig a pathway in any direction - up, down, left or right - and yup, you can even place climbing ladders. Your only mission, is to make it to the exit with as much gold as you can find. Some rounds bring some modest challenges and other slight variances, but this is essentially the same game throughout. There's several different modes to try, including, Freeplay, which includes Gem Miner 1 & 2, Expeditions, which includes 42 different levels to conquer, and Mission Packs which include two paid upgrades titled, Rain Forest and Tech Mine. So if you get bit by the bug, there's lots here to keep you busy.
The controls are simple and effective. The graphics have a cartoonish look to them, while the animation remains simple and iconic. The sounds are decent, but add little to the play.
Gem Miner 2 is decent fun for short rounds of play, though I question how long it will hold one's interest over time. Personally, I'm already bored.
