Review Background Eraser

Brandon Girod
8.6Excellent
Powerful tools, intuitive interface
The tutorial guides aren’t built into the app, the entire process is pretty time consuming
I was pretty excited to start using Background Eraser for Android until I found myself on a webpage trying to find where the “how-to” guide was conveniently stored. This is an app that takes a user’s uploaded picture and helps them remove the background, but it doesn’t do it automatically and it takes some time to actually go through all of the motions.
Having to access the how-to guide from a separate website was a bit off-putting because those are features that should be baked into the app. It shouldn’t take the user multiple clicks to find it. After reading through the how-to I found out that there were a few different ways to erase the background but none of them were automatic and all of them too a steady hand.
The first thing you can do is use the extractor tool. Select the keep tool and highlight the area inside the object you want to keep. Then take the exclude tool and draw a larger shape around the object and it will automatically exclude the background. The issue is that it doesn’t get all of the background so you’ll still need to exit from the extractor and manually exclude parts of the background, which is a long and tedious process.
You can also use an auto tool where you click on parts of the background and it erases it, which I found to be the fastest way to go about it. You’ll still need to go in and manually erase parts close to the object you want to keep. The last way is pretty much going in manually through every aspect of it.
The process is really time consuming; however, and I’d probably be more likely to erase the background from a picture in something like GIMP or Photoshop. Background Erase really does work, but using it on a smartphone is cumbersome.
