Review Off the Record: Linden Shades

Jay Feldman
7.5Good
Quality graphics, decent game play, simple controls
Too easy, very common, low quality animation
Off the Record: Linden Shades for Android is a decent hidden objects game with a heavy handed presentation. Play investigative reporter and unlock the secrets of this abandoned orphanage. This one is rather pat and predictable, yet is sure to entertain diehard fans of the genre.
Off the Record: Linden Shades displays in landscape, and I'm not sure what it is about this developer, but they always insist on spamming you with ads for additional games before letting you even try the one you downloaded first. Setting that aside, the play here is rather cookie cutter and predictable. In this one, you're an investigative reporter prying into the history of an abandoned orphanage via hidden objects play and an occasionally cringe worthy plot. There's various static scenes where you gotta find various hidden objects off a list. Some items can be combined to create new ones, which drive the plot forward and unlock various mini games along the way. It’s all very competent, just not all too inspired or original. It's like this developer makes these on an assembly line, with only modest differences from one game to the next.
The graphics are always the best feature of this developer's games, and these are of very nice quality, with excellent details that help keep the hidden objects play interesting. The animation is basic motion tracking on still images, with the occasional glittery effect when objects are found or hints are activated. Another sleight of hand played by this developer is to tout certain unlocked features as "collector's editions," which is laughable because collectible items are usually numbered, come with a certificate of authenticity, or at least have a providence that can be traced and verified. There’s nothing collectible about an app virtually anyone can download.
Off the Record: Linden Shades is a decent hidden objects game best suited to diehards of the genre, and anyone fool hearty enough to buy into this developer's sleight of hand and continuously heavy presentation.
