Review Sky Launcher- Superior Launch

Brandon Girod
8.0Excellent
Mostly good designs, lightweight on resources
A lot of featured themes were missing, most themes were third party downloads
Launchers are a pretty big deal on Android even though Google has done a pretty good job making stock Android look pretty spiffy. Even manufacturers like Samsung and HTC are getting in on the deal in their most recent OEM skins. Sky Launcher for Android is an alternative launcher that makes theming your phone a breeze and is light on the resources it takes to do it.
The most important aspect of a launcher is how it works as a launcher. What I like about this app is that it pretty much gets out of the way for you. It doesn’t try to reorganize all of your apps into annoying folders or puts a bunch of useless widgets on your homescreen. It does come with a few apps like a resource cleaner, which is totally unnecessary, but that seems to be par for the course.
The whole experience felt very much like an iOS device. The built in lockscreen is reminiscent of my very short lived days with iOS 8 and the default app icons are square with rounded off edges that also have a familiar vibe. There is one cool gesture feature. Swiping up pulls down a list of quick options and looked really nice. Honestly, the default theme was probably the best looking theme out of the lot that I saw.
Running a Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, I found that the majority of wallpapers and app icons just weren’t high resolution enough to be used on a device with a 1440p screen. Perusing through the themes was fluid but each theme you download is an extra download from the Play Store and half of them don’t even exist.
Overall Sky Launcher is really competent and the themes aren’t half bad looking. It adds a few gesture features which are nice, but the most important “feature” is that the launcher just keeps things simple and doesn’t try to bog your phone down.
