Monthly subscriptions, old fashioned design, internet connection required
MyHeritage for Android aims to help you discover your lineage through a family tree that you build yourself, from the ground up. This is a great activity for parents, children and families to do together. But beware, you may not get very far without a paid subscription.
MyHeritage displays both in portrait and landscape, making it ideal for tables, which is where you'll get the best views of your family tree. Naturally, you will have to sign up for an account to make use of the app and start building your family tree, the basics of which are totally free. The app will prompt you to make your first entries, which are also the easiest. Just input as much information as you know about your immediate family, grandparents and great grandparents; name, place of birth, maiden name, deceased or living, and basic stuff like that. You can also add pictures for that personal touch. That's the free and easy part, the rest is where it gets tricky.
The app offers a host of in depth searches you can conduct manually, but the app will also scour public databases for you in search of long lost relatives, however, that will cost you a monthly subscription fee, which starts at $10 monthly. The good news is, it's not exactly indefinite. You could pay for a month of in depth searches, glean all your best results, then cancel your subscription and leave it at that. The app functions well throughout, however, the presentation isn't exactly modern or dynamic.
MyHeritage is a good way to explore your family history, and a temporary subscription won't cost you much and may help you learn some interesting things about who you are and where you come from.
