Review Evoland

Jay Feldman
8.9Excellent
Quality game design, neat graphics, responsive controls
Too easy, very common, animation is a bit laggy
Evoland for Android is a fantasy combat RPG that evolves through the history of gaming as you play it. Start off in an 8 bit world and gain abilities, resolution and 3D perspectives as you go; where it stops, nobody knows. This one is just downright cool.
Evoland starts off in a monochromatic, platformer style world, where you move through an outdoor maze in an 8 bit sorta world in search of treasure chests and magical powers. Yup, there's plenty of enemies to combat too, in the form of weird squid-like creatures that walk on land and pixels bats the flop through the air. But you gotta earn your way through this one, so you got no sword to combat your enemies with until you find one. Good news is, there's plenty of surprises hidden in plain sight and inside various treasure chests. Before long, you'll be unlocking things like a plot, special abilities, secret pathways, 16 bit color, 3D perspectives and big boss fights. It's all very nicely done and if you play close attention, you're actually getting a little history on the evolution of gaming; hence why it's called Evoland.
The controls use an invisible d-pad on the left for directional movement, and screen taps to stab your sword and make basic selections; all was copacetic. The graphics, well, literally run the gamut from 8 bit to... well, I'll leave you to find the rest out on your own adventures. The animation is crude and choppy by design and sticks close to its retro roots. The sounds feature MIDI style music that is surprisingly enjoyable for a little while before demanding to be muted.
Evoland is fun because I want to keep playing just to see what happens next. This one is worth checking out for sure.
