Review Skate Lines

8.1Excellent
Intuitive mobile controls, cool, abstract aesthetic, innovative gameplay
Needs more gameplay modes
I grew up playing skating games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. My childhood was filled with it up until I was a teenager and found the formula to be a bit stale. Since the last THPS and Skate game to come out, the video game world has been sorely lacking one. Skate Lines for Android is mobile skating game that is dripping in inspiration from THPS.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I first jumped into this game, but was pleasantly surprised. There are no real game modes, everything is just a free skate. There are two ‘levels’ to pick, but they’re honestly just different backdrops. The game is a side-scroller, so the controls take full advantage of that.
Your left thumb controls how fast you go and can let you do nollies, while your right thumb is what pulls off all of the trips. Simply hold the screen with your thumb and a list of tricks will pop up. There are about 10 directions you can flick your thumb in, and your character will perform the trick in context with the environment.
So let’s say you’re coming up to a rail. If you do nothing, you simply skate right by it. However, if you ollie then you’ll jump on the rail and grind.
There is honestly no other goal in Skate Lines. It was created seemingly to have fun. It even has a feature in-game that will record your sessions so you can share them online. Obviously, I think this game is great and had a lot of fun with it. It’s a little short because there isn’t much to do in it, but it’s good fun.
