Review Circular Tennis 2 Player Games

Brandon Girod
Features local multiplayer gameplay, offers an interesting take on tennis, the controls are really responsive
There is only one game mode
Local multiplayer games on phones have always been a little awkward and usually reserved to simple card games or something turn-based so you can pass the phone around. Circular Tennis for Android takes those tired old tropes and throws them directly on the ground. This isn’t a game about taking calm and collected turns until the game wins. It’s a game about frantic, fast-paced, circular tennis!
The first thing I really enjoyed about the game was the art style. All of the characters looked like basic caricatures of popular tennis players. My favorite part was that the court was actually a tennis ball. In retrospect, that’s the most obvious choice, but I think it’s cool nonetheless.
Anyway, games can support up to 4 players, but playing with just two players is more than enough. Each player has their character placed on one end of the device with some basic controls. You can hit the ball, or you can fake out your opponent and make them react again by ducking so the ball comes at them from the opposite direction.
However you decide to respond can drastically affect the way the game plays out. For instance, if you keep hitting the ball back to the other player, the ball will start moving at almost unmanageable speeds. If you decide to duck every time, the ball will stay the same slow speed it starts off with.
Much like tennis, you have to command a lead and score in order to actually win the game.
Circular Tennis is a really fun local multiplayer game, which something I don’t think I’ve ever said about a mobile game. Most of them are really bad, or just aren’t fun. This game looks at the shortcomings of the platform and embraces them to create a fun experience for everyone involved.
