Review Skyward

Brandon Girod
Features unique level design, the aesthetic is vibrant
Some of the mechanics feel off from time to time
I’m a big fan of games that have a unique, almost material design look to them. When I first booted up Skyward for Android, my immediate impression was that I was going to like this game. It’s a beautiful endless game that focuses on moving a circle up an odd design. It’s all based on timing, and it’s really addicting.
I’m hesitant to call this a platformer because even though you’re traversing platforms in a vertical manner, you’re not exactly jumping to anything. There is a red circle that circles around your regular character, and this is what predicts where you move to. You have to time it right so that you move forward, which is relatively easy. The hard part comes from pushing yourself.
If you sit around too long, you’ll lose from being slow, but the fun is in trying to move through the level as fast as you can. Your experience with the game is roughly based on the way you play it. I found the game to be pretty dull when I played it safe, but had a lot more fun when I tried to speed run my way through.
One of my complaints about the game is that there seemed to be a weird delay in the response from the controls. There were times when my circle was clearly over land and I would still die. Other times I was really iffy on the landing, but would still survive. There didn’t seem to be any real rhyme or reason as to what would work and wouldn’t in these situations.
Skyward is a great way to spend some time while you’re at the doctor’s office or waiting in line in just about any other scenario. I don’t think the gameplay is compelling enough to spend hours playing it, but it’s good fun when you need it.
