Fresh setting, solid gameplay mechanics, great performance
Doesn't do much to push the genre's boundaries, the visuals are too goofy
Tower defense games was one of the premier genres of games to come out on the mobile platform when it first hit popularity. Some of them were great, most were generic. The cool thing about tower defense games is that you can still find a new one that feels fresh. Defend Your Life! for Android is one of those that feels fresh, if for nothing else, because of the environment you’re playing in.
This is a game that gives you a reason to defend your base, and that’s because your base is your body. The title is literal as you are literally defending your insides from evil viruses and bugs from taking over and killing you. This is a fight to the death.
Now, this isn’t exactly the most innovative game. It’s refreshing because you’re not a traditional army, but the gameplay formula is still pretty much the same. You’re building towers that can be upgraded. One of the cool things about the game is that most offensive towers start off as typical turrets, but can follow different upgrade paths. Each tower has its own strengths and weaknesses that you’ll need to take advantage of in order to win.
As much as I like the game’s premise and environment, I think the visuals could have used a bit of a makeover. For some reason, it just didn’t grab me, and even though the game was fun, the visuals gave it a cheaper feel.
Overall Defend Your Life! is definitely worth a look at, though. I like the idea, and the gameplay is as solid as it’s ever been.
