Responsive controls, charming visuals
Forgettable story, level design is inconsistent
Despite the awkward controls on touchscreens, platformers seem to be a really popular genre of games. JellyKing: Rule the World for Android is a lighthearted platformer that gets the controls right and is charming as well.
You start off by getting introduced to a future jelly king. I’m not exactly sure what the jelly king does, but this little guy is pretty upfront about wanting to rule the world, and you’re going to help him.
The beginning levels are pretty simple and they mainly exist to introduce you to all of the game’s concepts. Unfortunately, there is a lot of text during these tutorial levels, and I’m not a huge fan. Mario gave you everything you needed to know right off the bat and you never heard from him again. I don’t really care why the jelly king wannabee wants to rule the world, just let me play the game!
So, the concepts in this game are really simple. You’ve got to collect all of the coins in each level to progress. The jelly is always jumping, so timing your movement is important, and there are plenty of environmental hazards to remind you. It also introduces mechanics like power-ups that let you do a double jump, so sometimes you’ll need some quick reflex to make things happen.
JellyKing: Rule the World is charming, like I said, mainly because of the art style, though. I didn’t care much for the character in general or his ambitions. The controls were pretty tight, and I didn’t have any issues with them not being responsive. The level design was good for the most part, but there were a few times where I felt like they were taking a few steps back in difficulty.
