A great take on old mechanics, good production value

The match three genre is just as strong now as it’s ever been. The mobile market is absolutely flooded with them, and if you want to get noticed, you need to do something different. Gemcrafters for Android is one of the handful of match three games that’s doing that.
The first time you jump into a game, you’ll probably find the board somewhat empty. That’s because the strategy here isn’t just matching a few gems together in order to dismiss them. Instead, you need to create paths for gems to move to so they can fuse together to create better quality gems.
The game does a few things to make this task more difficult that it seems at first sight. Every move you make spawns more gems. So, while you might be planning a few moves ahead, one bad spawn could completely ruin your strategy and require you to think on your feet.
It also introduces ice blocks, which is another objective rather than trying to rack up a certain amount of points in x amount of turns. This is a familiar mechanic that basically has you matching all the gems encased in ice in order to remove them from the board.
Gemcrafter is a game that has a lot of production value, and that’s one of the things that gives it its charm. Rather than feeling like I’m playing a Candy Crush knockoff, I feel like I’m playing a legitimate peer. I’m not a huge match three fan, but I appreciate what it does to the gameplay, and think it’s definitely a game any fan of the genre should have a go at.
