Offline maps take a considerable amount of time to render
If you’re a frequent hiker, or maybe just runner, you’re probably used to logging your routes via Google Maps or maybe some other kind of running/exercising app. Viewranger GPS is a GPS app that is dedicated to bringing you a robust set of hiking features straight to your phone. That way you won’t have to rely on tugging around a full GPS unit and your phone, or suffice with simple apps that don’t have all of the features you need.
If you’re coming from a dedicated GPS unit then this will be a considerable upgrade in terms of just visual fidelity. The maps, tracking, and everything about it just look really sharp. For normal phone users, you might actually find it a bit on the ugly side of things compared to Google Maps.
It comes with a robust set of features and has pin point tracking features. You won’t find yourself several feet “away” from your actual destination, it’ll tell you exactly where you are.
The app makes setting up routes extremely easy and gives you a lot of different ways to track certain information as you hike such as speed, altitude, trip time, etc.
One of the issues I didn’t like about the app involved how it handled the visual aspects of the map. Because it actually downloads the maps as you view them, it can take a while before everything is actually updated.
Viewranger GPS is a really powerful tracking GPS app for people who love going out in nature without having to worry about how to get back. The tracking features are super accurate, and the UI, while not the most beautiful, is completely functional and easy to use.
