Block Side Rush for Android is yet another gem-style matching game with a twist. While this game contains the same elements from gem-matching games, the game also has a very different feel to it. To my surprise, I quite liked it. For some reason, the game really feels like you're playing a rubix cube.
The game is more about searching for the right colors, instead of just going around swapping gems. The reason is because you can really get any block on the map to another spot, but in order to do this, you have to swipe up or sideways in order to switch block positions. This dynamic intrigued me greatly, and actually made the game really fun. Couple that with great visuals, and satisfying audio feedback, and you have a pretty decent game. That said, there are the inevitable microtransactions all over the game, and frequent notifications asking you to play again. However, unlike a lot of free-to-play games, I actually enjoyed my time playing the game. If you haven't seen the South Park episode yet, it talked about how free-to-play games aren't actually that fun; just enough fun to get you to spend money to make them more fun. This is the type of game that is fun enough that you might want to spend a little bit more money to continue enjoying the fun, instead of investing money into the game to have fun in the first place.
Graphics in the game are simple but fun. The thing I like about this game is that a lot of the blocks have different designs, which include swirly rainbow colors, magnet blocks, or bomb blocks. Basically, there are just a lot of blocks in this game to play around with, not to mention the different power-ups you get to start off the levels with. A lot of these blocks have special abilities, like randomly switching things around in the level.
Block Side Rush feels really bright, colorful, and polished in a premium way, even though it's a freemium game.
