Fun game mechanics for attacking and defending, progression outside of the combat, pvp is incorporated into the game's core
Level design is half-baked
Ambush! Tower Defense for Android is a tower defense game with a hook. You have a kingdom that you’re defending because, well, that’s what you do in tower defense games. However, the game doesn’t stop at just defense. This game lets you flip the board, and you can also play as the offense as well.
The regular defense mechanisms are the same that you’ve played in other games. You have four types of towers you can purchase to defend your citadel. When you’re not in a battle, you can upgrade these towers which will unlock these in actual battle. In addition to towers, the offense player has four types of portals that waves of units come through. Each tower and portal has strengths and weaknesses. For instance, the arrow tower is strong against the scout portal, but weak against the infantry portal.
I found the mix between playing defense and offense really refreshing, and the game pulls it off in a really good way. I had fun playing both sides, but there is a bit of a catch. The level design in the game isn’t the greatest. In fact, I kind of felt like that about most aspects of the game. It takes a really long time to upgrade your citadel and produce resources to upgrade things, and upgrades are expensive.
Towers and portals have interesting concepts, but it takes away a lot of the depth of a traditional tower defense game and simplifies it by objectively stating one tower is strong or weak against a certain type of portal.
At its core, Ambush! Tower Defense is really fun and refreshing. However, it kept me thinking that it’s a really good idea that would be better implemented in another game, maybe by another developer.
