Review SimplePlanes

Kevin Vadala
Very complex but learnable systems, teaches you about planes, fun plane controls
Some might be turned away from complexity
SimplePlanes for Android is an airplane game that, in some ways, feels anything but simple. When it comes to building planes, there are a wide variety of options to play around with, from color schemes, to learning about the individual parts of a plane. While the game presents a lot of options to the player, it is all wrapped up in extremely in depth tutorial systems that will ensure you understand the game, as long as you invest a fair amount of time.
In SimplePlanes, you can build your own airplane, and pick and choose parts to customize it. There is a lot of terminology in the game, and I found it interesting that by building a plane in the game you can actually learn a lot about planes themselves in real life. This game, at its heart, is not only a plane-flying simulator, but a plane-building simulator; something I hadn't yet to encountered. The tutorials are long (some 19 or so slides-of-your-finger) with detailed information on plane mechanics like yaw, or how the angle or part of a wing impacts your flight path. For example, if you want to do a barrel roll, two parts of your wing will flip in opposite directions, and that's what causes the roll physics. I found that fascinating.
While building your planes can be complicated, flying in the game is pretty easy to understand. You simply throttle up your engine to provide power, and then control your plane with another joystick on the right. The controls feel good and the plane’s movement feels a bit arcadey. It can be a little hard to steer it in the direction you want, but its not terribly annoying, and takes some skill to master. Overall, I expected flying the plane to be a little bit more involved. But I think flying in the game is easy enough not to dissuade more people from giving the game a chance, despite the complexities.
SimplePlanes is a great game for plane enthusiasts. They will find themselves with an amazing amount to do in the game. For those who aren’t as into planes, there is still a lot of content to learn, which is provided easily and in a fun manner. It just takes some time to get the hang of things!
