Minimal interface, functions quickly
Quotes didn't seem that cheap, limited coverage at present
GetTaxi for Android offers a taxi booking service direct from your mobile. It's similar to the popular service Uber, but doesn't yet boast the same extensive coverage.
If you need to book taxis often in Israel, you might want to try this out, as it has all the major cities there covered. If you live in New York, London, Moscow or St Pertersberg, you might want to try it for price comparison, alongside Uber.
I'm a fan of the idea of these apps, because I don't like that feeling of not knowing, in advance, what a taxi ride is going to cost. I always worry about having enough cash on me. Besides, I like to know the price so I can see how it compares with other options. It would be easy to say that GetTaxi has missed the boat, as Uber are now dominating in this new kind of service. But competition can only be a good thing. It should drive innovation, and keep down costs, both for drivers and customers.
GetTaxi has a spartan interface. Use GPS to get your location, or search for A and B, with lists of POIs. The lists of hotels and restaurants were very short though. There's also an airplane button upfront, to help get you to or from the airport quickly. GeTaxi are attempting to get the service off the ground by offering free ride coupons for inviting your friends and suchlike. There are the same neat features of being able to track your taxi in real time as it arrives, rate each driver, and the option to pay by card; without any additional fee.
There may be some bargains to be found here, but my first search quoted £140 for Heathrow to Central London. At that price, you would be better off looking around online, or just pitching up at the taxi ramp.
