Challenging gameplay, lots of quirk and personality
Requires Facebook login to save progress across devices, the art design is uninpsiring
Yummy Mania for Android is a tasty match-3 game fresh out of the oven. It’s a free game that stays true to the typical match-3 formula, so don’t expect to find any surprises. Fortunately, the game is quirky, fun, and has its own charm that helps create the sense that you’re not just playing another knock-off.
The gameplay is solid, and it has all of the same mechanics you’re used to. You need to connect 3 of the same pastry to get a match, but you can match long lines, L-shaped lines, and T-shaped lines as well. You’ve also got a number of other power-ups you can use to help you boost your score beside the normal ones you might be used to.
The art direction leaves something to be desired as its not vastly different from its peers. It’s pretty much at the point that you’d never be able to tell one of these apps from the others. Where it has its own quirks is in the animations, music, and sound effects.
One of the biggest drawbacks to the game is that you have to log in with Facebook in order to save your progress across accounts. In my eyes, this is one of the worst ways to handle situations like this because not everyone uses a Facebook account, myself included. However, every Android user must have a Gmail account to attach to the phone. It just makes sense to include Google’s Games integration into your app.
I did enjoy my time with Yummy Mania, and it carves its own little space into the match-3 genre. It includes several different power-ups to help keep the gameplay more exciting, but the overuse of the same old themes are starting to wear me down.
