Amazing graphics, simple but great gameplay
Kingdom Rush Origins for Android is another game from Ironhide Game studios, and more specifically, another tower defense game. While thousands of other developers have managed to make the genre feel laughably overdone and contrite, Ironhead still manages to make the genre feel fun and exciting through its amazing polish and intuitive gameplay.
Immediately upon starting up the game you will notice the graphics. Everything has a soft cartoony vibe that looks simple but also enticing. Needless to say, the art in the game feels premium, and worth the initial 2.99 asking price. You get to see a map of your next missions, and you even get to see a brief comic cinematic to introduce some form of story into the game - which, doesn’t really add up to much but is still a nice touch. At the end of the day you are fighting enemies to protect your base - this is tower defense after all.
That is one thing I like about Kingdom Rush. It feels very comfortable in knowing what it is. There aren’t a wide variety of menus to sift through, or microtransaction ads, or things built into the game to purposely make things confusing - no, it just feels like a plain simple tower defense game. You have your basic positions on the map, towers to build, and as you move through the levels more things are available like your personal hero and a variety of spells that all feel satisfying to unleash upon your enemies - which, all look pretty different and are fun to kill. I particularly like how some throw Molotov cocktail like things.
Level design is great, and even from the beginning you are given different types of levels to strategize and build upon. The first level doesn’t even feel that standard, and the second much less. This isn’t a simple winding - row tower defense game.
Kingdom Rush Origins is a great tower defense game with amazing fantasy flair and polish. The microtransactions in the game exist, but aren’t up in your face and you can earn them simply through playing the game.
