Unique combat system, decent animation, simple controls
Too few RPG elements, in-app purchases
Enter a world of powerful magic and strange creatures. Phantom Rift for Android is a role playing game that immerses players in a strange world and places a vast array of spells at their fingertips. Players can expect to see the usual RPG elements such as equipable items, experience points, compelling story, etc. and even a few unusual ones, such as the uniquely designed combat system.
The game world presents itself as a series of levels interconnected by portals that the player can explore. During the course of their exploration users will encounter a series of strange creatures and enemies that must be overcome in order to achieve their ultimate goal: the return to the “normal” world.
Combat in Phantom Rift is something that needs a bit of getting used to. Luckily the first few zones enemies are quite forgiving which goes a long way in preparing future great wizards for the challenges to come. At the start of the battle players are presented with a selection of random spells from their pouch. These can be equipped or discarded based on usefulness and available mana pool. Once the battle has started the player and the AI can move along the available grid while dodging, attacking and casting spells.
Overall the game has plenty of features to keep players engaged and combined with a unique combat system make the game a truly entertaining experience and one of the truly interesting dungeon crawler RPGs available on the platform.
