Nice story, decent game play
Dependence on in-app purchases
Spellfall - Puzzle Adventure for Android is a story driven match 3 game that adds more depth to the gameplay by creating a reason for creating combos.
Spellfall - Puzzle Adventure allows the user to play as a “duskwalker”, a person capable of using magic powers to force the elements of nature to do his bidding. A trait passed through bloodlines by people born during the brief time between day and night. Players must fight corruption wherever it may hide by using these powers, triggered by using combinations of elements.
The game is a tile matching puzzle where matching 3 or more tiles results in a spell based on the matched element. Each enemy faced has his own weakness that can be exploited with the proper element. Forming the appropriate spells to play on the enemy’s weaknesses will go a long way to reduce the amount of needed moves in order to obtain victory. As the number of available moves begins to run out, the opponent will start his attack. During the downtime between fights the user can customize the main character by equipping weapons or armor that drop after almost every victory thus adding an extra layer of depth to the game
Overall it is a well-constructed game with a great story to tell and fun gameplay mechanics to match it. Controls are standard for a tile matching puzzle game, relying on swiping the tiles from their original location to the desired one. It does come with a downside tough, the freemium nature of the game. Despite its huge potential, it relies heavily on in-app purchases to be worthwhile. Progression will be frustrating for players that choose not spend money on the rather expensive transactions.
