Review Yes Chef!
Match 3, chef style
Author: Vlad Popa
Date: 13 May 2017, tested on Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo
Smooth gameplay, one-finger controls, no ads
Common gameplay, in-app purchases
Yes Chef! for Android is a game that manages to combine the match-3 game type with the culinary arts and cute, colorful graphics to produce something different, while not truly unique.
The graphics are extremely cartoonish; the game does not even attempt to appear realistic. Characters all have their own designed exaggerations to create some extra comic relief. Bright colors and fluid animations are also a big part of the game’s overall feel and manage to prove fairly amusing, even for older users.
In terms of gameplay things are mostly generic. The user is presented with diverse layouts for each level and must combine elements in combinations of three, four, or five to score points. The only thing that manages to set the game slightly apart from the competition are the levels and the tiny mechanics that they introduce. For example in certain levels the player must combine food elements to create meals for their customers, while in others they must “defrost the refrigerators” by unlocking frozen food elements. The story proves amusing at every turn, even if a bit minimalistic, and at some times dialog proves to be overly simplified.
Overall Yes Chef! is a game that plays smoothly and, despite appearances and first impressions, is a highly addictive game that can be enjoyed by users of all ages, despite being aimed at younger audiences. Although the game does feature in-app purchases, the user should not feel compelled to rely on them unless truly stuck on a level.
