Review Cars: Fast as Lightning

7.7Good
Simple but polished mechanics
Feels like lost potential, micro transactions lurk beneath game
Cars: Fast as Lightning for Android is a racing game based on the popular Cars movie. While the game is definitely made for kids, and the game actually starts off by warning parents that the game has micro transactions, I can say that the game does provide enough fun gameplay experiences for older kids and perhaps adults.
The racing in the game isn't that complex, but the racing works well. You control a small car and it is controlled automatically. The way things work actually feel very similar to playing a racing game with a remote control on a car track. The car races around the track and you control its acceleration by letting off the gas pedal around turns. When you slow down on turns correctly, your car doesn't run into the sides. Then, you're awarded points for doing good. As the levels progress your car races through the same map (I didn’t really like how the game got lazy and simply rehashed the first couple of levels), but the levels start to require more swiping. For example the 3rd level or so has a loop-dee-loop (added onto the track) that requires you to swipe up as you go near it. Later on, there are moments where you have to tap a certain blue circle spot on the track at the right time to speed up.
When I first launched the game I was immediately impressed with the graphics. Granted the graphics I was looking at was simply a small cut scene with small dialogue coming from the different car characters. The racing takes place from a top-down angle and it looks pretty decent. Again, it looks like a hot wheel track in some ways. The graphics truly are best within the cut scenes that takes places after races. It makes you wonder what the game could've been like if the whole game was made this way. Then again, that viewing angle would make the game harder to play than the current graphical choice of top-down.
Cars: Fast as Lightning is a game that definitely feels made for kids, but the mechanics and gameplay are actually pretty fun. The game is simple, but the controls work well and while micro transactions may lurk inside the gameplay if you lose too much, your experience should be relatively frustration free. It’s a great game for those that are fans of the Cars movies or for casual gamers like kids.
