Innovative camera recognition, feels like google glass
Not useful for experts
CamFind for Android is an application that allows you to search for things based on a picture or a voice command. CamFind reminds me a lot of the popular Google now service, but with an additional feature that uses a highly advanced picture algorithm to find you information.
The picture component of this application, is perhaps its most interesting feature. The way it works is that you take a picture of something and then the application recognizes what is in the picture, and then it feeds it into the application to show you results. For example, I took a picture of a Starbucks cup and then the application recognized the Starbucks logo and the plastic cup. Then after it recognized those two things it showed me the nearest location of a Starbucks and it also showed me a few other Starbucks related tabs.
Well I found this feature cool. I didn't really think that this was very useful for me. If I wanted to go to a Starbucks I would simply type it in Google Maps and then it will show me the nearest location. However, I can see useful implementations of this feature in other applications.
For example, if I wanted to find a cheaper price on the item, given that the feature works, I can see this being very useful. If I went to BestBuy and scanned a game with the camera feature, theoretically I could find a cheaper version of the game online. In some stores the retailers actually let you price match with something online - so this could be a very handy application of this application.
CamFind also advertises that you can take pictures of movie posters and find times and locations for that poster. Similar to my Starbucks picture example, I don't see this being very useful - although it is very cool. You would have to be standing still in front of the billboard, or stop at a stop light. I don't see this being as useful as simply opening up a movie application and then searching for the closest movie times. For people new to cell phone uses and applications, I could see this application being very useful because of the way it lets you input data very easily through pictures and voice command.
While it is my opinion of how useful the application is, granted it might be useful or more useful for other people, it cannot be ignored that the application does work very well in most circumstances. I am sure that if you do a proper photo of something that has a proper logo you will find good results.
CamFind is a very fun, innovative, and interesting application that truly seeks to innovate. While I wouldn't always go to it first for some of its uses, I cannot ignore that it is a powerful application and one that might be fun for many people to use effectively.
