Review Tiny Farm: Season2

Tariq Abdulla
Funny sounds, decent animation, addictive game play
Hard to navigate, difficult to play without in-app purchases
Tiny Farm: Season2 for Android lets you build and expand your own cute little farm and zoo. As far as I can tell, these maps are separate entities and you just switch between them. The farm makes money by breeding, growing and selling animals. The zoo makes money by keeping animals in cages and charging admission fees and train tickets to look around the zoo. So you can keep moving up to bigger, more exotic animals, drawing in more guests. You need to upgrade gradually to more animals by buying certificates that marginally increase the number you can keep.
There are two different in-game currencies: gold and bells. However, the only way I can find to earn more bells is by planting a bell tree, which costs 80 bells. So if you want to get away with playing this game without any in-app purchases, you better plant at least one bell tree right at the start. This smacks of blatant trickery, seeing as there's an in-depth tutorial, but it never mentions planting a bell tree.
The "mini-game" elements which involve 'going on safari' to win some gold or animals are just a matter of turning over cards and trying to match three. So these lack gameplay. You'll feel wanted when you return to the game, as all the animals will want feeding, and your fields will need planting; but I don't think they ever die of starvation. You can only breed animals of the same type.
I found it hard to navigate Tiny Farm: Season2 at times, with popup notifications that were difficult to close, and the back button just wanted to exit the game instead of closing them. It took me a while to figure out where to go for more buildings in the zoo (there's a small house icon, bottom right).
If you can overlook these hiccups, and remember to plant a bell tree, Tiny Farm: Season2 is playable without in-app purchases. Building up your farm/zoo/beach empire will provide another free, cute and innocent way to waste your precious time.
