Features unique stealth-based game mechanics, level design is fun and interesting
Movement controls feel sticky, depth of field can be a bit weird at times
I won’t beat around the bush with a fluffy intro fro this game. Spycube for Android is one of the freshest mobile games I’ve played in a long time. It takes your typical mobile level set up and throws in some really fun platforming stealth mechanics that I haven’t really seen anywhere else. Check out this game now!
The game describes itself as an action puzzle game, but I don’t quite agree because everything is pretty much laid out there in front of you. The entire premise of the game is that each level has various objects that you need to avoid. Sometimes it’ll be video cameras, sometimes it’s guards, and sometimes it’s lasers.
Each of these obstacles can be dealt with in their own way, though. A laser, for instance, usually has a switch that either turns it off permanently or turns it off long enough for you to at least run through it quickly.
Sometimes it’s the level itself you need to defeat and I honestly found these the most difficult and frustrating because your character’s movement is “sticky”. Pressing forward in one direction moves it very slowly at first and then begins to pick up, although that’s not always the case. It’s just kind of unreliable.
Controls aside, Spycube is one of the coolest games I’ve played in a while. It does something completely different that you don’t see many games do anymore. Most mobile games are simple knockoffs, but this one is all about stealthy and moving platforms. It’s fun, fast past, and just different.
