Quality graphics, elaborated game play, no ads
Too easy at the start
Diamond Digger Saga for Android is a puzzle game from the supremely popular developer King (previous titles include Candy Crush Saga and Bubble Witch Saga). As you would expect, the game has highly polished graphics and cute sound effects.
Diamond Digger Saga isn't a typical match-three game: it's about collecting large groups of gems by matching them - but not by swapping them around. You also dig away dirt and rock underneath gems that you collect (rock takes more goes to clear than dirt or sand). And you are also clearing a path for water to travel through a particular chamber, to a plug at the bottom. So each game can consist of multiple chambers, with some different objectives to achieve in a certain number of goes. Getting through a chamber quickly is usually a good way to score high points, but you need to watch out for missing anything important in each chamber.
All this makes for a complicated game dynamic. It reminds me of modern fruit machines; there's so many different things going on that it can be hard to figure how to do well. On the other hand, the first dozen or so levels are easy. So easy, in fact, that your success is guaranteed, and there's really no challenge at all. You get introduced to a few special 'weapons' before you even need them.
Diamond Digger Saga does get more difficult eventually, and trying to meet the objectives within the limited number of goes becomes a proper challenge. But for my liking it takes a bit too long to get to that stage, and I found my interest waning early on. On the other hand, you can't argue with free, ad free, fun; with only the weak temptation of optional in-app purchases.
