Crisp graphics are great, controls are very good, good freemium model
If you don't like football you won't like it
Madden NFL Mobile for Android is the football game fans have been craving. The game brings solid football action to mobile phones without a restrictive payment model, good controls, and great graphics.
Upon loading up the game, you learn the ropes by playing the tutorials. The tutorials are clear and fun to follow. They let you play the game and learn the game at the same time. They are in a sequential manner each teaching you something. You start out by picking your play, and then you are shown your players lining up against your opponent. Each one of the players in the game look good. They are sharp, and even though they are small I enjoyed their models
From the period before the ball is thrown, you can see the controls to tap that throw the ball. Each one of the players that can have the ball thrown to them has an associated control key like X, or Y. These circular buttons stand out inside the action. These buttons are for an external controller.
But without a controller, it is as simple as tapping the player to have the ball thrown. If you double tap the ball will be thrown quickly, and if you tab once the ball is "lobbed". I found this control system works very well. The ball always went where I needed it to. When the ball is caught, you can control the player with a thumb stick. You can also zoom out before the play, which I thought was useful.
Another feature I was impressed with is the way that kicking the ball through the field goal works. When your players line up, you are shown a small grey panel at the bottom of the screen. You flick your finger the way you want it to go. It is like drawing a line. Then, the ball launches the way you flicked. It's different than some other control schemes, like on other consoles where its a timing meter - but it is responsive and satisfying to flick it the right way.
The progression in the game has been well thought out. You can spend coins in order to get better players faster, but by completing things and simply through playing the game you can unlock coins and thus improve their lineup. If you are playing and progressing, it is hard to hit a pay wall which is a very good thing.
Madden NFL Mobile also has a variety of modes to keep you busy. You can challenge friends through social media, or play random opponents. There are also live events throughout the day to keep you busy. Madden NFL has fun and satisfying controls, a variety of multiplayer options, good tutorials, acceptable and sharp graphics, and customary hoo-has from the players. You can't go wrong with this one.
