Neat animation, online multiplayer, addictive game play
Is lagging, dependence on in-app purchases
Matching With Friends for Android is a twist on the familiar match three style games, brought to your by the creators of Words With Friends.
Matching With Friends takes your basic match three style game and gives it the ol’ Zynga touch. In this one, strategy comes into play because you are competing against friends via Facebook integration, or random online opponents. The game environment is your basic match three style grid. But instead of just moving jewels around to make matches, you actually place blocks of three onto the game board and try to build as many matches as possible. There's a set number of blocks for each round, and once you’re done placing all your pieces, just hit the 'play' button to watch the results of your choices. Then it’s your friend’s turn to play. Whoever makes the most matches by the end of the game wins.
The format is intriguing and familiar. It’s actually nice to see a legitimate innovation in this highly popular game genre. The app functions relatively smoothly, though waiting for an online opponent can take some time. However, like other games by this developer, you can just move onto other things and the game will notify you when a new game is ready and it’s your turn to play.
The graphics are nice with some colorful and entertaining animations. And there are various power-ups available. As with most Zynga games, it’s possible to play this for free, but there are several personalization option and play upgrades available for a price.
Matching With Friends is very nicely done and will be entertaining for anyone who enjoys match three games, or online play against friends. It’s fun, innovative and inviting.
