Review Bonsai Slice

8.4Excellent
Humorous, interesting graphics, unusual game play
Controls are a bit hard to get used to, bores you really quickly
Everyone has at one point or another fantasized about being a master at swordplay. With Bonsai Slice, you can. Hone your skills by wielding your device as a sword and slicing through just almost everything you could want. Ok so… maybe it feels a bit more like bashing than slicing at times.
The environment may look like it’s been drawn for a cartoon, but the camera work is brilliant and the gameplay is quite unlike most games. While most games would have you swipe the screen in order to slash, slice and cut things, in Bosai Slice you wave your device around, similar to a finely sharpened blade, in order to slice through objects. Through the movements of your device your gyroscope controls the camera and the attached sword.
Once a round is started you have a limited time to slice as many household items as possible and collect as many coins as you can, by touching them with your sword. Although it sounds simple enough, things will begin to get complicated as bombs will start spawning among the objects you have to slice. And if they are touched by your sword before the appropriate time they will explode causing the next wave to spawn, reducing the score you can obtain. As if maneuvering your sword through a bunch of bombs to reach your targets was not hard enough, at later stages they will also begin moving, forcing your strikes to become even more precise.
Overall Bonsai Slice for Android is a great little game. It is fun and innovative, with plenty of comic elements added to the game. Controls are a little hard to get used to but soon you will find yourself slicing like a true sword master. The only issue I had with the game was that actually holding the device as a weapon makes it harder to see the environment and increases the risk of accidentally dropping it. It’s a good thing that the controls are responsive enough that you can simply use tilts in order to play as it seems much safer.
