Review avast! Mobile Security
A modern and powerful security suite with some inconveniences
Author: Jay Feldman
Date: 11 Apr 2017, tested on ASUS Nexus 7 (2013)
Powerful functionality, functions quickly, minimalist design
Inconvenient interface, needs to be elaborated, lags a bit
avast! Mobile Security for Android is another full featured security suite competing for your attention. It has a host of familiar and effective features, but a few needless flaws as well.
avast! Mobile Security has quite a nice feature set. I like the anti theft feature that not only takes pictures of alleged thieves, but also records snippets of audio too. It’s an intriguing thought and does raise some privacy questions, but then, if someone steals my tablet or phone, I’m not too worried about hurting their feelings with a little covert monitoring.
Most of the other features are quite familiar for a suite like this, the usual antivirus scans and safe browsing are all good; however, avast! makes the misstep of presenting these features as add-on plug-ins, which just proves to be cumbersome and needlessly convoluted. Each plug-in has to be downloaded and installed separately, which just adds extra steps that serve no real purpose and adds clutter the whole footprint.
The menus are well presented and I like the modern look and color scheme. Scans were fast and seemed thorough. Several advanced features require a paid upgrade, but that’s nothing unusual from any other suite.
avast! Mobile Security is well put together and seems as comprehensive as any other security suite, however, the clumsy plug-in presentation just adds needles download steps. I think it’s a perfectly worthy security suite, bet there are more convenient alternatives.
