Al Jazeera English for Android brings the in depth analysis of this global news channel to your phone or tablet. Al Jazeera has a reputation providing a different perspective on the news, for covering many regions that go underreported by other global English news channels, and for providing in-depth analysis by subject experts. But content is one thing; how about the app?
More specifically, why would you install a news app on your device, when you can just go and check the website anytime? Well, there are a number of features that make this news app a joy to use, and make it worth having on your device. For example, after you’ve opened it just a few minutes, it’s already downloaded all the text of all the current news stories. So if you are catching a train, for example, you’ll be able to read some news, even without a data connection. It doesn’t try to download pictures unless you open the story, so it doesn’t use up much data doing this.
Then there’s what I call the “guilt factor”. Maybe you feel like you should check out the news a bit more, but you mostly end up just messing around with whatever time wasting apps you have on your phone. With a news app staring back at you, you are that much more likely to go and have a look.
You can stream the Al Jazeera English news channel live via the app, which works very well, and you can also just stream the audio (“listen live”). In the latter case you will be able to listen to Al Jazeera live, and simultaneously read news in the app; or go and get on with whatever else you want to do on your phone. Or you could just leave it playing in the background like a radio, while you’re doing something else.
