Great for kids, decent animation, decent graphics, decent game play, simple controls
Lags a bit, not interesting game play
Horde of Heroes for Android is another twist on the classic match three style play. Match gemstones to attack enemies and win battles in this retro looking game.
Horde of Heroes looks like something programmed by Atari, back in the day. The top portion of the screen has heroes on the left, and mythic beasts on the right; all ready to do battle. The rest of the screen features a basic match three style grid with colorful gems. Match any three gems to trigger an attack on top part of the screen, in turn by turn style play. Cause a mismatch, and your enemy takes advantage of the mistake and attacks you first.
The graphics are very old school looking; very blocky and rudimentary. However the game features a very nicely animated opening sequence that sets up the whole story. Kids will be fascinated with the fantasy, picture book feel of it all. The animation is decent, but not very refined. But everything is very colorful and inviting. The play itself is interesting. I like the twist of launching battles based on successful matches. This should keep things interesting.
Horde of Heroes might not offer much to keep older players interested; however, this is perfect for kids. They will undoubtedly be swept away by imagination and all the colorful characters and action onscreen. Yes, the game offers in-app purchases, but they are not needed to enjoy the play.
