Word Chums for Android is my all-time favorite word game. If you love Scrabble and Words With Friends, get ready to have your socks blown off because this one is the best of the lot; by far, bar none. Promise.
Word Chums is utterly genius. I have been a Scrabble fan ever since I was a kid, so when I made the leap to an Android tablet, I was excited to see the original game was available. Sadly, the originators of this game have created a terribly buggy app, which gave opportunity for Words With Friends to jump in and take over. But now there’s an even better word game in town called Word Chums.
Like all these style of word games, you play against an opponent and try to build the best words and score the most points. Play against friends sitting right next to you at home, or against online opponents. You can invite friends, or just play random opponents automatically matched up for you. But Word Chums takes it a step further – you can also play in teams against multiple players online. Very cool and adds a whole new level to the game.
What sets Word Chums apart from the rest is the colorful graphics and playful spirit. This one plays a little like a Saturday morning cartoon. Very amusing and pleasing to the eye, with lots of personalization features like, hairdos, teddy bears, crowns, etc. You can literally bling out and trick out your little munchkin character to look like and wear almost anything. Yes, most of these tweaks require ‘coins’ to buy them. But the good thing about this game is, the in-app purchases are totally optional and do not affect the game play whatsoever. If you’re in a hurry and itching to buy that purple hair and scepter for your little munchkin, then you can certainly shell out some real money to buy all that stuff. However, if you just be patient and play the game, you will earn plenty of coins for free and can easily upgrade everything to your heart’s content, all without paying a dime.
Word Chums is one of the only word games I've played that has an actual dictionary that defines all the words on the board for you. This is invaluable as a teaching tool as well as just nice to have. Some smarty pants is always coming up with words I've never heard of before, so it’s nice to just touch the word onscreen and have a definition come up for it. It’s a great way to learn new words and expand your vocabulary
If you don’t like any of the letters you have to play with, just hit the Bomb button to make them explode and change into an entire new set of tiles, all without losing your turn; just play the new tiles instead, and hopefully come up with something better than your original tiles. There’s also a hint option, and of course, Pass if you really get stuck. Hints and Bombs can only be used once per turn, so if you change all your letters and still don’t like any of them, you’ll just have to make do. There’s also a star ranking system on the upper right that lets you know the value of your words before playing them; 1 star means it’s ok, 3 stars means it’s the Best Word available for your tiles; so all that adds to the fun, and challenges you to come up with better words.
The animation is very cute and funny. I love the comical sounds too. Plus there are oodles of themes to choose from and they even give away free Holiday themes as different times of year.
Word Chums has really got me using a lot of words here, but that just shows you how much I love this game. This is absolutely my all-time fave word game. It kicks Scrabble’s butt and is far more refined than Words With Friends. Simply put – this is the best word game created to date. Excellent fun for kids and adults of all ages; this is a true, must-have app. Paid version removes adds, but the freebie plays excellent too. Get it and have some fun!
