Classic play, one finger control, fast paced
Made the battery hot, gets boring, needs to be developed
Hard Rocket for Android plays like a classic arcade style game. It’s a fun time waster and I like the fast paced action and simple play.
Hard Rocket is the kind of game a lot of old school gamers will appreciate. The objective is to fly your rocket trough a jagged cavern while avoiding obstacles and oncoming craft firing at you. The game is a side scroller, moving from left to right at a good clip of speed. Go as far as you can for as long as you can. But be careful; the cavernous flight path has bottlenecks and jagged zig zags that keep the flight challenging and intense. Hit the cavern walls and you'll go boom in a comical flurry.
The controls for Hard Rocket are simplicity itself. Just tap the screen with one finger to make your rocket accelerate with a bouncy trajectory. It’s almost like Flappy Birds with respect to the flight pattern; very springy and manic. It’s tricky to navigate through the twists and narrowing cavern as you bounce your rocket along. Firing at oncoming craft sorta just happens all on its own. There’s no real control for it, just keep tapping to fly and the laser gun fires all on its own when there’s a craft directly in front.
The graphics are funny. The pilot of the rocket ship looks more like a surfer dude, complete with long flowing blond hair; cowabunga, dude! And the sounds are equally comical. For as simple as it is, the app sure did use a lot of resources and ran my tablet warm in no time.
Hard Rocket is one of those simple yet challenging time wasters that you can play for a minute or two sporadically throughout your day. Probably it would get boring fast if you played any longer than that. But then, some video games were like that; just pump in a quarter and have a few minutes of fun. Same thing here; fun enough for an occasional whirl, but nothing too memorable.
