Age of Wind 3 for Android is swashbuckling fun. Ever wanted to be a pirate? Secretly wish you were Johnny Depp? Want to play a cool nautical game? Well, this app can address at least one of those desires, and I’ll leave it to you to decide which one.
Age of Wind 3 is a highly polished game of cannon fights, booty and rum; no, not that kind of booty, though a little rum never hurts if you’re looking for the other kind. You are the captain of your own ship during the age of brave discoverers and deadly pirates. Navigate your ship out at sea and battle pirates bent on destroying yer ship and steelin’ yer booty; arrrg! Fire cannons, sink ships, collect their loot before it sinks to the bottom of the sea. If you’re victorious, reward yourself with a visit to the seaport to sell your winnings and replenish your supplies. You may even stop into the tavern and try your luck at dice. Perhaps you’ll win a few gold pieces to buy more rum and keep your crew from mutiny.
The controls are excellent; just tap the left and right arrows to steer your ship. Enemy vessels come at you from all sides; just turn your boat to the port or starboard side to get them within your canon’s range, then fire, in a sink or be sunk battle. If you do sink a vessel, their supplies and loot float on the surface for a while before sinking; navigate your ship over top them to collect and keep the booty all for yourself. But be wary, because other ships are still looking to attack you.
The sounds are a lot of fun and appropriately swashbuckling, and the graphics and animation are highly entertaining. It’s fun do just set sail and explore your environment after the battles are done, but if you try to go too far out to sea, the app reroutes your ship back toward the game environment, so there’s no charting off to discover long lost lands; at least not yet.
Age of Wind 3 is very well done and entertaining. This should hold player’s interest and be quite fun to work through all the levels and see where it goes. The only thing I question, is if the game can enjoyed to the fullest without spending real money to buy fake gold so you can get fake rum and ammunition and kick butt. But aside from that, this is good fun.
