Great Battles Medieval for Android is part history lesson, part RPG. Brought to you by The History Channel, this game literally recreates the scene of several historic battles and puts you in charge to replay the events your way. The battlefield is very elaborate, and you can deploy troops on foot and horseback as you see fit. This is your chance to rewrite history, so to speak, and decide how these battles will unfold when under your command.
Great Battles Medieval is amazingly detailed. The flags, uniforms, military structure; it all has a very true to history and authentic feel. The controls are easy, just tap the battalion you want to move, tap where they should go, then execute your commands and watch the battle throw down. Pinch zoom controls let you zoom in on the action for a better look, and just touch and slide the screen to move in any direction on the battlefield. The detail is outstanding, but the zoom should have gotten in a little tighter to fully appreciate it all. This would be a terrible game to play on a cell phone because so much would be lost. Do yourself a favor and play this on a tablet so you can fully enjoy all the work that went into this.
The game plays smoothly and is highly refined. I really didn't run into any glitches, but all the detailed renderings sure stressed my CPU. I could feel the back of my Nexus getting really warm, but this is to be expected. Elements of this game feature actual footage from several History Channel specials, and those vignettes help immerse your senses and take you deeper into this historical game. This is not a fast paced shoot ‘em up style game. It’s more like historical chess and really does a great job of recreating the era, accuracy and intensity of how it truly might have been.
Great Battles Medieval is probably one of the most elaborate and detailed RPG battle games I've ever played. The historical element to it all only makes the game all the better. A lot went into this, and it’s not a game you’ll play or conquer easily. This one will take time, strategy and patience to master. Great educational tool for kids too and definitely worth checking out.
