Review Contra: Evolution
Retro combat with none of the intrigue
Author: Jay Feldman

Decent graphics, one-finger controls
Uses a lot of system resources, kills your battery, very common, bores you really quickly, low quality animation, not interesting to play without paying money
Contra: Evolution is a decent game, if not sluggish and overly dated. I love retro games that bring something new to the table; sadly, the only modern innovation this one possesses is greedy in app purchases.
Contra: Evolution is a retro style combat game that reminds me of Duke Nukem, but with none of the charm or refinement. This one is a crude side scrolling game with bland action and mediocre graphics. Just move your soldier across the game environment to blast enemies and gunners. The look is part futuristic, part realism and 100% boring.
The controls are just ok. The soldier fires his gun automatically, so there’s no skill required there. Just move, jump, and select alternate weapons, if you care to pay for them; or just waste your time trying to earn them through dull and mediocre play. The animation is slow, laggy and has virtually no intrigue. The graphics are crude and maybe on par with really bad 80’s arcade games; there were plenty of great ones to come out of that era, but this would not have been one of them.
The sounds are cheesy at best; lots of grunts and arrrrrrgs. The app made my CPU run really hot, so it’s definitely killing more battery cells than bad guys. The menus are also very shoddy and lack refinement. Virtually everything triggers the need to buy something, which would be fine if there were a game worth playing here.
Contra: Evolution is terrible. I can’t say it any plainer than that.
