Review Google Play Games

Jay Feldman
8.0Excellent
Interesting functionality, intuitive interface, simple design
Privacy intrusion
Google Play Games for Android is your one stop app for finding new gaming friends, keeping track of apps and playing online. It all comes under the guise of convenience, but it's also starting to feel like a bona fide invasion of privacy.
Google Play Games is a stock app that comes with all modern Android gizmos. A lot of people may not even realize it’s there, but if you take the time to sign in and create your profile, you’ll be rewarded with a whole new layer of gaming enjoyment. Personally, I have so many accounts and places I need to sign in to, that I just don’t care to have another one. So I was resisting creating my Google Play account because it also required setup of Google+, and I didn't care for the ripple effect of creating 2 accounts, right out of the gate. But I bit the bullet and finally joined. The process wasn't painful or belabored, yet the rebellious side of me just resented it all the same; it all feels so obtrusive and like another layer of my privacy has been stripped away by Google. But the lure to improve my gaming experience apparently has finally outweighed my need for privacy.
Google Play Games will track your achievements and high scores, and also try to suggest new games you may like based on past play. It’s all good, yet somehow, it just triggers the creepies in me. Google is getting way too powerful for their own good. But I guess if some conglomerate is going to invade all our lives, at least Google seems cool enough. I just tend to resist monolithic utopias on a genetic level.
Google Play Games makes it easy to keep track of what your friends are playing and you can join in on any multi-player games easily. The interface is simple, clean and inviting, but then, we all expect no less than the best from Google. My favorite aspect of Google play, is the "Trending" option; it's a great way to discover emerging games and apps. However, I personally don’t care for all the cyber stalker activity this kind of app promotes; people watching your every move, knowing exactly what you’re up to; it’s all just a little much for me. However, if you’re willing to surrender yet another segment of your personal privacy, Google Play Games is a great way to enhance your gaming experience. The downside, is it’s all starting to feel a little too much like an iOS experience. Leave the spying to the NSA, Google; at this point, you know as much about us all as they do, and that all kinda gives me the creeps. But I guess I'll turn a blind eye to it because I wan a one stop app that keeps track of all my gaming; it's important to keep your priorities straight.
