Excellent controls, food mechanic makes the game extremely fun, enjoyable open world
Leveling dragons takes forever, some of the dragon designs are goofy
Imagine a world where fire-breathing dragons constantly diving at you, plucking birds out of the sky and stealing your sheep was just a normal part of life. That’s an everyday reality for the poor folks that live in the world of Hungry Dragon for Android. This is an endless game that feels really good, and while you recognize all the tropes, this game just doesn’t feel as low effort as many other endless games like.
Let’s talk about the world, for starters. The world is open for you to explore freely. I’m not sure how big it easy, but like a Metroidvania game, it’s one that isn’t immediately open to you. Instead it shows you a lot of the things you have to look forward to, most of which involve bigger things you can eat.
Eating is the biggest part of the game. You need to eat to survive so you’ll spend most of your time hunting things to eat. As you do that, you’ll level up which will eventually unlock more dragons for you to play as. Unlocking bigger dragons lets you eat bigger things, and then we kind of come full circle. The idea is to stay alive as long as possible, and the game’s mechanics make this a really fun thing to do.
Overall, I was really, really impressed with Hungry Dragon. I didn’t really know what to expect judging it from the screenshots, but the gameplay really sold me. I actually had to pry myself away so I could write this up, but I’ll be jumping right back in… now!
